Elementary Book List

All the books in this list have been read by either Jenn (proprietor of Comics in the Classroom), or one of her staff. They are certified to be appropriate for the elementary age group and have been chosen for their benefit to classrooms and libraries.

Some books on the Elementary List are also available on the Intermediate List. This is because we feel these books have a wide-ranging appeal. We have noted where books are targeted for older readers at the Elementary level.

Synopsis: Binky is no ordinary house cat. He has recently become a card-carrying member of F.U.R.S.T. - Felines of the Universe Ready for Space Travel. Inside his house, Binky has been fighting the good fight against the alien menace, which his humans refer to as bugs. Not being very bright, these humans appear to not realize that the bugs are aliens and so Binky must protect them. Binky's goal of space travel leads him to build a rocket ship in his litter box, but right when he's blasting off, he realizes that, if he leaves, his humans won't have anyone to protect them from aliens. So, he aborts his mission. This is a cute and funny tale about being brave, whether it's in taking on the risks of outer space, or protecting one's family from aliens.

Stupid, Stupid Rat Tales: This book collects two stories set in the Bone universe, both written by Tom Sniegoski. The first story, drawn by Jeff Smith tells the story of Big Johnson Bone, in his fight against Rat Creatures before becoming opening his trading post on the Rolling Bone River. The second story, drawn by Stan Sakai tells the story of two Rat Creatures as they rather unsuccessfully attempt to capture dinner. Both stories capture the fun and adventure of the Bone series.

Synopsis: As the introduction to the first volume explains, Korgis are magical fox-like creatures, companions of woodfolk called Mollies. The Korgis and Mollies live happily together in the forest with many other magical and strange creatures. The stories follow the adventures of a Korgi and a Mollie who get into a variety of trouble with unfriendly magical creatures, including aliens. As it fortunately turns out, Korgis can breathe fire and Mollies can fly, which helps them escape their predicaments! In the second volume, The book is entirely wordless, except for the introductions to each volume. The character designs and attention to detail of the art draw the reader into the stories. Each volume leaves the reader hanging and provides a perfect jumping off point for a "what would happen next" exercise.

Synopsis: Clarg and Blarg are brother and sister monsters who live in a volcano. Despite that, they often find themselves bored. One day, they decide to pretend to be the strangest creatures they know of - humans. In vivid images the artist demonstrates the monsters' imagination by showing what the monsters are really doing on the left-hand page and what they're imagining on the right-hand page. For example, as the monsters imagine getting dressed, they're really putting on a snake as a tie and a strange spiky creature as a hat. The book is incredibly imaginative and extremely colourful.

Synopsis: This book collects three Little Vampire stories - "Little Vampire Goes to School", "Little Vampire Does Kung Fu", and "Little Vampire and the Canine Defenders Club." Little Vampire is just that, a little vampire. He lives with his undead parents in a haunted house, full of ghosts, monsters, and other strange things. Little Vampire is a little unlike other vampires though: he wants to go to school. But there is no school during the night, when vampires can be out and about. So the other creatures of the house go to school at night with Little Vampire, so he can have his wish fulfilled. While at school, Little Vampire completes the homework of Michael, the boy whose desk he shares. Michael, overjoyed, soon starts writing messages with Little Vampire, and eventually they meet and become friends. Together with Little Vampire's dog Phantomato (named for being a ghost and the colour of a tomato), the three get in and out of trouble in the real and ghostly world. The stories are endearing, very funny, and contain some grotesque elements a la Roald Dahl. Recommended for grade 5 and up.

In the end, Vergrandis gets bigger and soon is the biggest member of his family, but he always remembers there's always someone bigger and always someone smaller. The most important thing is to treat others the way he wants to be treated. This is a great little book aimed at ages 4-8 about bullying, friendship, and overcoming adversity.
